INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY'S YOUTH:
The United Way of Indiana County was awarded a Community Coalition Capacity Building Grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to develop a county-wide prevention coalition utilizing the Communities That Care (CTC) Model.
More than 500 communities throughout the U.S. use the CTC model, which involves the 5-phase change process with the goal of promoting healthy youth development and reducing problem behaviors.

ADVOCATING FOR ALICE
The United Way of Indiana County is at work helping our ALICE community.
ALICE stands for asset limited, income constrained, employed. The United Way of Pennsylvania Report revealed that on average 30% of households in our county have income which falls below what is needed to pay for basic necessities such as housing, food, childcare, healthcare, technology, and transportation.

The United Way of Indiana County supports 211, a free confidential service that helps people find the local resources they need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Every day people across our county turn to 211 for information and support - whether financial, domestic, health or disaster-related. 211 is a free, confidential referral and information helpline and website that connects people of all ages and from all areas to the essential health and human services they need.
211 can be accessed by phone or computer. A toll-free call to 211 will connect you to a caring community resource specialist who can put you in touch with local organizations that provide social services that can help.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) was established on March 24, 1983, with the signing of the "Jobs Stimulus Bill". That legislation created a National Board, chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that consisted of representatives of the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.
EFSP funds are intended to respond to the changing hunger/homeless needs; not to maintain the status quo. The intent of EFSP funding is to address hunger/homeless needs to make a difference - not to simply spread dollars among all eligible applicants. Additionally, the National Board encourages Local Boards, the decision-making local bodies, to place special emphasis on the identification of and the assistance to the elderly, families with children, Native Americans and Veterans.
EFSP funds are typically available yearly. United Way of Indiana County publishes a press release once the National Board notifies us regarding the availability of funds. The press release will explain how to apply for funding. Funding comes directly from the federal EFSP fund and is managed locally by the United Way of Indiana County.

The United Way of Indiana County offers summer funding through its micro-grant program for eligible non-profit organizations that demonstrate a solid programmatic plan for meeting human service needs.
A United Way grant project can be defined as one that addresses health, education, financial stability or basic needs in Indiana County.
